Community Service

Our President, Barack Obama asked the American people to get involved in the community by doing community service, he said "turn today's efforts into an ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of others within their communities, their cities, and their country."

What are your thoughts on this statement? Discuss ways you could enrich lives of others in our community, city, and/or country. Why would our Barack Obama ask this of people? Do you think you will take up the challenge?

  1. Barack Obama would ask this of people to do his job and better our country. Doing community service is a good thing, it helps show what kind of people are living in our country. Also shows who wants to better it. You could enrich lived of others in the community by doing all the volunteering you know of, and help support others as much as you can.

  4. This is a powerful statement made by Obama, community service is important and brings the community together for a beneficial cause. Ways to help in the community city or even country is to start small by cleaning up your community, helping at food banks or research benefits/ sporting events in your area that raise money for local or national charities. Obama may have said this to suggest that we lean away from selfishness to become selfless in helping the lives of the less fortunate. Each year i volunteer at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classis benefiting 12 childrens charities.

  5. I think that people should take time to do community service to keep our world beautiful. People should be considerate and throw away their trash properly instead of throwing it along the highway. Obama would ask us to do this because the world would be prettier if it was kept nice and neat. I would help by recycling and picking up discarded trash. There are signs are around that say, for example, “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.” We need signs are the world to remind people to keep our world clean.

  6. Barack Obama is asking the American population to do this because in order to have a better country, we need people to act. You can volunteer places in order to enrich peoples lifes. Even serving food at a homeless shelter, or picking up a piece of trash on the street will help. I'll try not to be selfish and help the community to make this world a better place to live in.

  7. I believe that this is a good statement. One way we could enrich lives of others in our community, city, and/or country is having everyone clean up the mess that they make themselves. I think he would ask this of the people because he wants to clean up America. Yes I think that i will take the responsibility to clean up the environment.

  8. My thoughts on this statement is that we should help out our community and other people in the community by doing some community service when we can. We could read to little kids and work in the soup kitchens to enrich the lives of others. Barack Obama would ask this of people to try to get them to be active in the community and try to make the community look better. I do not think I will partake in this challange more than five hours a month because of all the other things I am doing like playing sports.

  9. Our President is asking the people of the U.S to do community service to help the country, and people live better. Because working together and helping each are important parts of a country. Thats why we are one. But not everyone is helping and Barack is asking us to help to our communities, cities, and lives well be enriched.

  10. I believe that we should do this community service. Why, so we can allow healthier lives, more positive atmospheres, and a better place. We can clean up the streets of trash, repaint benches, and anything else needed. Just by doing the small things, we can make a huge impact on our future. Why Barack Obama asks this is because we can do so much better for our lives. We choose to live a life of bad, when all we have to do really is just change the bad little things we do now. Yes, I believe I will take up this challenge. Cause what little is done now, a prosperous life I will endure in the future.

  11. I think its a very good statement. Simple ways to help others in the community are to donate old clothes to goodwill or homeless shelters, reading/tutoring little kids at the library, and helping out the soup kitchen or dinners put on by the churches for the needy. I think he asked this of people because americans now a days have a reputation of being very lazy and selfish, and he wants that reputation to go away so by doing a little commmunity service and helping others that are less fortunate it will not make us seem so lazy or selfish. I do think i will take part in this challenge. Nicole Pinage

  12. i beleive Barack is trying to make our country a better place. i could enrich lives by selling popcicles and then donating some of the profit to the local cancer research center of course. and i beleive we could clean up the mess that we make and keep our country clean.

  13. This statement looks good on paper, but it can mean two different things and it should be put into action according to what America was founded on: freedom. Americans should have the right to want to help out in their community, but it should never be forced upon someone, even if they are financially stable, to "spread the wealth." There is a difference in community service and communism. There are plenty of people that would want to help out in their community, but when you force them to give up the money that they earned fair and square, well then you’re taking away freedoms.

Barock Obama most likely made this statement because he needed to justify taking American tax dollars for “spreading the wealth.” Some people might make the argument that he said this as an inspiration to help people get involved in their community, but I have been too well aware of his politics throughout his campaign and his first few months as president to be convinced of this.

I plan to take up the challenge of community service whether I am forced to or not. Discluding the fact that I will most likely be paying for multiple peoples health care when I grow older and paying many bills for those who don’t have a job, I will also volunteer for multiple charities (as I have already begun to do). I will hold true to my values and not be responsible for the killing of any innocent human beings who haven’t even begun to enjoy life and what I ask you could be more of a community service than this? 14. I believe that Obama is trying to make a difference in this country. I also think that it would be a good idea to help out and do a little community service, even just picking up after yourself is better than littering.

  15. I think that it is good that the American people to get involved in the community by doing community service. There are so many ways you could help someone. Many people think community service is boring, but once you see the happy faces of the grateful people you help you will forever be changed. It is so easy to help out a little. It does not have to be anything super big, just a little here and there can help more than nothing at all. However, the difficulties we all are facing right propose a challenge. Does Obama really expect us to be able to give that much to others when many Americans are drowning in debt? How can you help those who need help when you are one of them yourself? I agree it is a good idea, but the timing may be a bit off. America is going through a tough time and we need all the help we can get.

  16. I am not an Obama fan, I will say that right now. But I think that he is right in this one peticular thing. It is good to help out our community especially in these rough times. All you have to do is clean up the streets or donate old clothes or something simple. I will take part in this challenge. Bridget Hutchinson

  17. Barack Obama is too legit. But he is not only saying volunteer once or twice a year, he is wanting people to commit to make the world a better a place, and clean up the enviroment. He doesn't mean volunteer once every 2 years at a homeless shelter, he means make an everyday honest effort to better the world. Instead of throwing your pop can out of your car window, save it, take it to Kroger and recylce it. Get 10 cents! If your taking a little walk in the park and you see a plastic bag on the ground, pick it up, and if possible recycle it! Unplug appliances you aren't using, don't leave tv's on for hours, and dont turn on lights when you don't need to! These are simple things you can do. Its great to volunteer at a homless shelter, but we all know none of you will, pick up a littered paper or turn of a light...thats where you can start to make a real differnence.

  18. I don't agree with Sydney about Obama being legit, but I understand and agree with her about making an honest everyday effort at community service. I'm not a vegetarian-save the rainforest-save water by never bathing type of person (hopefully no one I know is), but I do go with the motto "waste not want not" and I think that's a saying many people could live by.

  20. Kayla Winters is right Americans should have the right to want to help in their community, and it should never be forced upon someone, financially stable or not. Forcing someone to help takes away from the meaning of helping. If you were truly in need of help, would you want someone to be forced to help you? I personally would rather go without help. Helping someone is choice you are supposed to make out of the goodness in your heart. Do you really think if someone is forced to help that goodness will exist? I think not. It is like the old saying goes: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

  22. Katelin's quote was exactly the point I was trying to make. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." If those who are unemployed simply get "handouts" are they ever going to try and find work? If this were the case for you, would you ever go back to work? I wouldn't. I can help these people all I want but they won't change their ways. Therefore, I prefer to choose whom I give my charity to.

  23. Wow, many of you really put some thought into your responses. It's been my experience that when I give back by volunteering I'm the one who feels blessed by the experience. For example, my church needed more members in the choir. I can't read music and I don't have a good voice but I remembered being in a choir in grade school and I liked it. So I thought I'd give it a try . . .just to help out. It turns out the I was blessed many times over. I've made many new friends and really look forward to going to practice.
We often make dinners and serve at St. Pauls Lutheran church downtown Toledo and the Aura House (home for women and families struggling to get off drugs). Talking with the people and seeing the faces of the children really touch my heart. Again, I found myself blessed by the experience.
Giving back to the community is a win-win for all. I encourage you to reach out to others. Mrs. Lang

  24. I think everyone should do a little something for the country and its people. we live here too. Community service is just a good way of volunteering for the public and the private. Handouts for people are nice sometimes but only if they need it. Dont give someone charity that couldnt care less about themselves or others. Use common sense when choosing who to give charity and help to. Needy families are a good way to start. Ya know, Ponyboy Curtis made a good quote in 'the outsiders', "Stop trying to give me charity, Cherry!" Cherry : "Ponyboy, i wasn't giving you charity, i actually care!"
So, what i'm also saying is that even if you don't give charity to people, at least help them in some way.

  25. I will take up the challenge because I agree with Barrack Obama, we could all enrich the lives of the people around us by doing community service. Ways to do this are by, not polluting, volunteering at different organizations and places, and lending a helping hand when it is needed. I know that i will do my best to do these things and I think everyone should as well.

  26. I'll take the challenge because I agree with Obama, we could all inspire people by doing community service. By picking up trash on the streets, by participating in the race for the cure, or and walking elderly ladies across the street.
