Can you believe it, it's Memorial Day already? What does Memorial Day mean to you? Have you had relatives serve in our Military? Share with us stories you have heard from your family and friends. If you have no stories, research and share a story or poem you have found. We have our freedoms because of brave men and women that serve our country. Do we really realize how lucky we are to live in the USA?
I'll share with you a story from my father-in-law during WWII. He was a platoon leader and they were in a small town along the Rhine River in Germany. He had received orders during the day that the following morning he and his group were to cross the Rhine River. He was very troubled with the news. They could hear the Germans all night; they were on the other side of the river. He felt he and his group would be killed the next morning. He prayed to God to help his father. He had lost his mother just a few years earlier and he worried that his death would me more than his father could handle. As his group prepared to leave the next morning my father-in-law received new orders. They were to go further down the river to aid another group, they were not to cross at this time. A different group was given the assignment to cross the Rhine. As my father-in-laws group was leaving they could hear the bullets. Everyone that crossed the river that morning was killed. It was a sad day.

I cannot believe that it's already Memorial Day. This year has gone by so fast. I'm actually excited. But Memorial Day to me means it's the day where the people who have risked their lives for us in war and in support for them and in memory of them. And yes i do have a relative that was in WWII and i'm not quite sure what he did in it but i know that he's still alive(: which im very thankful for.

I can't believe how the year has flown by. It's almost summer!!My poppa served but I don’t remember what he served for. I’m pretty sure he said he was out of the country when my uncle was born. I know some of my friends have lost someone who has served in the Military. I know that there are some teachers around who have served. We are lucky to live in the USA because we have so many freedoms. Nobody takes the time to enjoy what we have. Everybody takes it for granted.

This year has gone by like a rocket, like a Fourth of July rocket. To me, memorial day means you honor those who have ever served in the military or are currently in it. I have had many relatives that have served in the military. One is my Grandpa who fought in Vietnam. He has told me numerous stories, but what sticks in my head is a picture of him in Vietnam at the age of 20 sleeping in a hallowed out barrell attactched to the ground. He said that was his house. There are some people who appreciate our freedom and some not so much. I love being patriotic and flying my American flag...I also own a pair of American flag socks...I'm wearing them right now with my flip-flops. USA ALL THE WAY

I don't know where this year has gone. When I think of memorial day, I not only think of the kick-off of summer but I think of everyone who has risked their life in a war for their country. I don't directly know anyone who was in the war but I have friends whose grandparents had something to do with it. They are no longer living but died from other reasons. I'm really thankful and I respect those who go out of their way to risk their life, because I know that I could never put myself through something like that.

The year didn't go by fast enough. J.k. j.k. the year went by very fast. But I'm worried about my second cousin is in the army and in the war. so thats the only one in my family that I know of, is in the army.
ReplyDeleteThis year went by soooo fast. I can't believe it. When I think of memorial day, I remember my uncle, and my grandpa who both served. Also, I know that my step great grandpa was deeply involved in serving during WWII. I am very thankful for the people that are willing to fight for our country.

ReplyDeleteThe year did go by fast. Memorial Day I think is a day when we should be thankful for all the people that have fought and died in the wars. My grandpa was in WWII and he said that it was the most horrible experience of his life. He said that bullets were flying everywhere and people were falling to the left of him and to the right. He was just happy to get out of that alive. i don't think that we realize how good we have in the USA.

Wow, this year has zoomed by. Memorial day is supposed to be a day to remember all who have passed that served in the service, but for most people its just the holiday that kicks off summer barbeques. My Poppy (greatgrandpa), my uncle whoes name i do not know, and my grandpa all served in the military. I never met my Poppy, but i am almost sure that he did something with the radios on the boats. He is no longer with us. My uncle was actually captured and became a prisoner of war. He passed away shortly after returning home. My grandpa flew planes. He refuses to ride on a plane to this day. He is still with us. He didn't serve very long because he was allowed to return home due to injury. I know how lucky we are because of the rights that we have, but i feel that many people dont really know how many lives were taken and all the heartbrake families had to go through to have the rights that we have.

Memorial day means closer to summer and time to swim. No, just kidding. it's about everyone who has ever served. My brother was in the air force, and my Grandpa was in the Marine Core during the Vietnam War. This story might not go over with some people, but the marines are gruesome in some way. well anyway. my grandfather was battling and he noticed someone pointing a gun at his chest, he was afraid to die, so he fell on the ground and held his breath. he held his breath long enough for the man to think he shot him and the man came over to him and kicked him, punched him but he thought my grandpa was dead. some other men attempted to cut my grandpa in half with a sword, which ended up leaving a battle scar from his chest down to his stomach. He was bleeding badly and thought he would die anyway but he survived and is now living with my grandma in maumee ohio. thats where smart thinking gets you.

No i do not the year has gone by that fast. Memorial Day means a gathering of all the people that served our country. Yes my grandpa was in the world war 2. He says that he had a buddy named john stone and they were running side by side when all of a sudden john dropped dead instantly. Yes i realize that i live in the greatest country of them all. The home of the brave, and the land of the free.

To me Memorial Day is a day to remember why this country is the best in the world. It is a day to honor those who allow us the privilege of living in a country where we do not have to fear being bombed every day, we do not have to fear being thrown unjustly into punishment for something we said or wrote, where we have the right to bear arms, where we can believe what we want, where we have freedom.
ReplyDeleteBoth of my Grandfathers served our country, but unfortunately I never really got a chance to hear their stories. However, I have heard other stories. Last year I won an essay contest sponsored by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and I got to meet many of these people who sacrificed so much for our country. As soon as you met any of these people you could tell how selfless they were. They actually thanked me for who knows what, when really they were the ones that required thanks. There were so many of these veterans, people that were willing to fight for our country, and the beautiful part was that I got to see these brave souls get appreciation for what they had given up. I got to see how America truly appreciates what Veterans have done. The VFW showed us a Veterans hospital and the National Home for Children. It was great to see that not everyone takes for granted all the freedoms we have in our country and who we have to be thankful to.
One last thing is a poem I thought was nice for Memorial Day:
Americans in Strength
Americans in strength unite
This union born in freedom’s light
United States, how sure we are
We’ll pull together, near and far
The world can see of what we’re made
Each state is of the highest grade
Determination, filled with pride
Our people’s will won’t be denied
Our founding fathers set to stay
The road we’ve traveled to this day
A quest for right cannot be wrong
With help from God, we will stay strong
Support our troops ranks number one
For the job they do is never done
When forced they put it on the line
True patriots, when called they shine
Let’s raise Old Glory with a cheer
And thank all soldiers, past and here
By Roger Robicheau
Thanks to all the soldiers out there fighting for my right to write this blog.

Unfortunately no one in my family, at least that I know of, has or is in the military. However, I did find a great poem that shows the importance of those who we keep in our thoughts on this lovely Memorial Day.
ReplyDeleteThey Keep Us Free
By Roger Robicheau
In time of need their will is sure
American, their freedom pure
Protect our life and liberty
Unselfishly, they keep us free
Each soldier knows what is at stake
The risk is grave, there’s no mistake
With pride they serve our country strong
They face each foe to come along
Remember them while in your home
Or where you choose to freely roam
Don’t take for granted what you see
Some left this life, so it could be
To God I urge you all to pray
For soldier’s brave, to face each day
We should be thankful, one and all
For those who march to meet each call
I cannot believe it is already memorial day! This year has gone by extremely fast!!!! I don't have any stories about my family serving in the war, so i have a poem:
ReplyDelete"Home of the Brave"
by Roger Robicheau
Through the feel of war they brave this day
How proud they stand, their unselfish way
Our soldiers bear what we cannot see
They assure our right to live life free
Each trained will face an unknown fate
Our support they need, don’t hesitate
Just imagine how this land would be
Without their courage - catastrophe
All the liberties we have grown to know
Would not exist, this life would go
Find a thankfulness within your mind
Speak gratitude for our bravest kind
Have the willingness to show you care
For fallen heroes, hold back no tear
Reach out to God with his guiding light
For our troops do pray, both day and night
America raise your flags to wave
For we truly are 'home of the brave'
Wow, neat peoms and very moving stories; Thanks for sharing. Mrs. Lang
ReplyDeleteI am surprised on how fast this year has gone by. I had one member of my family serve in the military, my great-grand father. According to my father, he was a mean sargeant. lol. And my father almost joined the military, but his mother, my grandma, stopped him in fear of losing her only son. Which anyone can relate to.
